What is a doula!?
I get it! I said "What in the world is a doula?!" the first time I heard that word too. Later on after a friend of mine explained to me, I came to understand that a doula was: a trained professional who supports women and families through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. "Wow!" I thought to myself, "this is something I really want to do..... this is something I NEED to do." So a few weeks later I signed up for a doula training in Dallas. Although I learned SO much at my training, I later came to learn that after every single birth, every single prenatal visit, postpartum visit, and new client, I add more and more to the definition of what a doula does. In short, a doula is key and vital to the birthing process. You absolutely need a care provider, and your partner, and your family, but a doula is not like any of those, nor does she take over, or "fill in the gaps" for those people. In her own special way that is unique to each client, she helps inspire her clients to research and build birth goals, encourage them to make informed decisions, and walks them through this new journey, together.
Whether you are planning a medicated hospital birth, or a home birth, a doula is a good fit for either. Often, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum is down right hard and confusing. I often tell my clients that doulas are like trail guides. They know the multiple paths you can take, and help guide you along whichever you choose. Doulas know birth and postpartum, Mama knows her baby, and Daddy knows his partner. Together, they make a pretty amazing team!
So what does doula care look like?
Sometimes birth doula support is lots of double hip squeezes, massage, comforting touch, and often it can include reading scriptures, birth affirmations, verbal encouragement, and guidance when there is a bump along the road.
Doula care also includes on-call text and call support from the moment you sign my contract.
Support and education on birth options are always given to each and every client. Along with knowledge surrounding optimal fetal positioning in the womb, prenatal supplements and activities, referrals to other birth and postpartum professionals, and evidence based resources.
Whatever you need, I'm here for! If you have any questions on what else doulas do, let me know!
